Folly – Engineers

Label: Echo

‘We don’t sound like anything current. We’re not like anyone else’ – or so the naive war-cry of the freshest kid on the UK block always goes. But the Engineers may just be right on this occasion, save for a murmurring resemblance to cultish light-prog bands like The Beta Band, Grand National, Autumn Defense, Kingsbury Manx and, dare we say it, even Spiritualized. The mini-album ‘Folly’ comes preceded by the single ‘Come In Out Of The Rain’ on September 20th and backed with a not unattractive take on Tim Hardin’s perenial autumn classic ‘If I We’re A Carpenter’. Characterized by the intimate, whispery vocals of Simon Phipps and some droney, lucid keyboard atmospherics, this Manchester four-piece may not have the funk or the edge of grandfathers of baggy, The Stone Roses, but they’re a stoner’s dream all the same. And just centre of avante garde. Thankfully.
