Backup Backup – Blowfelt

Label: Wordplay

Regulars at seminal early ’90s breakbeat raves, “Desert Storm“ and “Voodoo Majic“, Blowfelt are said to have learned some serious ‘low end theory’ from a disturbingly early age.

And though I clearly have no idea what it means, it certainly sounds good.

BACK UP, BACK UP is – whatever the theory – already selling like hot cakes within the difficult to path white label circuit under the name ”LICKLE ROLLA”. Originally championed by EZ, on his Kiss FM show the track is a crash tickling lobster of a record: one parts funky two-step to two parts drum and bass logic. The result? A 134bpm garage/ breakbeat hybrid monster riddled and charged with enough high velocity groove to rake up and wash out a tide of satisfied bodies in any dancehall throughout the midlands.

Slarta John the Birmingham-based toaster MC last heard on Basement Jaxx’s “Jump n Shout rasps and grills the mic with his stabbing Caribbean and the whole track is tastily backed-up by some chill rattle and hums.

Released with a drum ‘n bass mix on the flipside – a monster remix by Origin Unknown (Andy C) and including the ‘Lickle Rolla Original Mix’ the record is well worth getting your bike out and peddling down to your nearest  Wordplay stockist.
