Let A Good Thing Go – Gemma Hayes

Label: Source Records

‘Let A Good Thing Go’, is the second single from Gemma Hayes unusually well acclaimed album ‘Night On My Side’.A reasonably smooth mix of folksey rock, reminiscent of Belly and the frank, bare knuckle Garage crankiness of The Breeders, ‘Night On My Side’reveals a Sheryl Crow grasp of craft with a more angular, and more abstract feel for cookiness.

Fragile yet feisty and with indisputably complex soul of a poet, Gemma has traded in the dry, acoustic timidity of her “4.35am EP”, for the spectacularly wide-screen appeal of a wall-of-sound heaven. The guitars swell and crackle, the bass stabs and boils, the drums pump and rattle whilst the whispering, gossamer layered vocals of Hayes pick around the bones of an inevitable but lamentable sorrow.

Bonus tracks on the single include: a previously unreleased song, “Summers In Doubt”, recorded around the time of her 4.35am EP; a special version of “Pieces Of Glass” recorded live during a session at 2FM; an acoustic take on the last single “Hanging Around” and a eight-track version of “Ran For Miles”.

Throughout most of June Gemma will be touring in Europe. She is also planning an Acoustic tour of the UK this August. We think you’d be wise to catch it.
